Buried Treasure Part 1

by crash

"Hey Teal'c! Have you seen the Colonel?" Sam queried when she came back to their camp. She had just finished her discussion with the seismologist on SG-5 "I tried to raise him on the radio but didn't get an answer.

"O'Neill said that he was going to check on DanielJackson. That was quite some time ago."

Teal'c looked up from his dinner preparations since it was his turn for KP duty.

"Thanks. How long till chow?" Sam set her pack on the ground near her tent rolling her shoulders to relieve the tension form carrying her pack.

"Approximately fifteen minutes."

"I'll go get Daniel and the Colonel then." Sam waved as she headed down the path that was marked with blue flags.

They had been on P5J-1314 for two days. General Hammond had given them seven days to explore. SG-5 was accompanying them after the MALP picked up a tremor when it was originally sent through. The UAV fly over revealed that there were ruins of what appeared to be a city at the base of a hill. Sam was headed there now hoping that Daniel hadn't moved and that the Colonel was still there.

"Daniel" Sam called as she emerged from the brush.

"Sam?" His disembodied voice called out to her.

"Where are you?" Sam looked around not spotting the errant archeologist.

"Over here" Daniel's head popped up from behind what was left of a wall. "What's going on?"

"Chow's almost done and I was looking for the Colonel. Teal'c said that he came here."

"Jack came by earlier and said that he was going to explore a little further then come right back. That was two hours ago. You try to raise him on the radio?"

"Yeah, he's not answering."

Colonel Jack O'Neill was three miles away from the ruins squatting by a stone wall. He had only planned on walking out about a mile then heading back but for some odd reason he had felt compelled to keep going.

At first there was nothing interesting, just the usual trees, bushes, and grass. He didn't plan on climbing the hill but found himself halfway up it; intrigued by the writing that was on a smooth outcrop of rock. It didn't happen often but once in a while he was able to help Daniel with translation. Ones that were in Latin, thanks to that time loop, and Arabic which he not only spoke, but could read and write.

He didn't realize how much time had passed. He started at what he thought was the beginning of it all and read. For the first time no images of his time in Iraq sprung to mind as he pronounced the words softly to himself. He continued to read, eventually finding himself in a small cave.

It was more of an alcove curving in the back. It was only perhaps twelve to fifteen feet deep. The ceiling was low but high enough that Jack didn't have to bend down to get in. The walls reminded him of the old fashion plaster walls. They were smooth yet uneven. It didn't look like any natural cave that he had ever seen. The floor was covered in patches of dirt otherwise it was a smooth as the walls. In the back were some animal bones that had obviously been there for a long time.

The writing was all about the history of the people that had settled in the City at the base of the hill. He couldn't figure out what they were called or what kind of people they were. It had never said.

"Daniel?" Jack spoke into his radio. "Daniel you read me?" Not receiving an answer Jack looked at his radio finding that it was turned off.

Switching it on Jack tried again. "Daniel"

"Jack! Are you okay? We've been trying to reach you but you haven't answered." Daniel's static filled voice answered.

"Yeah I'm fine. Radio wasn't turned on. But look I found this out crop of rock and it has text written on it. Arabic. Anyway my question is who or what is Geb? G-E-B."

"Just a second." Daniel squeezed his eyes shut thinking "Geb, son of Shu brother and lover of Nut. He and Nut were separated by Shu. Nut became the Goddess of Sky and Geb became the God of Earth. Nut eventually gave birth to Osiris, Seth, Isis, Nephthys, and Horus."

"Okay more then I wanted to know." Jack shook his head trying to process everything that Daniel had just spit out at him.

"What does it say about Geb?" Daniel inquired.

"Well I'm pretty sure that the last sentence here says 'I fear that we have angered Geb.' I could be wrong, but it's kinda of messy at the end. Like who ever did this was in a hurry."

"Legend is that Geb would take his frustrations of being separated form Nut out in the form of earthquakes." Daniel paused "Jack can you tell me how to get there?"

"Sir? Where are you?" Sam asked before Jack got the chance to answer Daniel's question.

"Oh 'bout two or three miles from the ruins half way up the hill. And yeah I can tell you how to get here."

"Chow's ready sir and it's going to be dark soon." Sam told him

"Daniel I'll tell ya what. I'll meet you guys at camp and bring you up here tomorrow. Don't want to be out wandering around in the dark."

"I'll save you some chow sir." Sam said as she began to head back to camp.

"Go with Carter Daniel I'll be fine. See you guys in a little bit."

"SIR!! It's spiking." Sergeant Hendersen of SG-5 hollered at his CO Captain Juan Sunez. The officer ran over to his make shift station.

"Major Carter!" Sunez yelled into his radio.

"Sunez what is it?" Sam answered immediately picking up the panic in his voice.

"The seismograph it's spiking! And we are feeling tremors as I speak."

It was the last thing that Sunez said before the quake hit, knocking everyone violently off their feet. It didn't take very long for the quake to hit Sam and Daniel at the ruins site. They tried to cover their heads as they fell to the ground. The remaining ruins were crumbling all around them.

Jack had just shouldered his pack that he had sat down at the rear of the cave, when the quake began. He hurried toward the mouth of the cave not wanting to be in there when it hit. Jack was just a few feet shy of the opening when the roof of the cave collapsed on top of him followed by the rest of the hillside

Is everyone okay?" Sunez asked rolling onto his back and rubbing his face, wishing the marching band in his head would go away

"No sir." Lt. Michaels answered wincing in pain as he attempted to move his ankle. "Damn crate fell on my ankle. Pretty sure it's broken."

"Hendersen. Are you okay?"

"Yes sir. Just some bruises and a monster of a headache." Hendersen answered trying his hand at standing up using a crate for balance.

"Go check on Teal'c while I look at he Lt.'s ankle." Sunez ordered getting to his feet finding himself a bit woozy.

Hendersen nodded and head toward the camp where Teal'c had been finishing their evening meal before the quake.

"Teal'c?" Hendersen approached the prone man carefully not wanting to startle him.

"Capitan he's out cold. Looks like just a nasty bump to the head."

"Alright. I'll check on him again in a minute. Head down the to the ruins and check on Major Carter and Dr. Jackson." Sunez releases the button on his radio and finished the quick splint on Lt. Michaels' ankle.

Hendersen followed the path marked with the blue flags. Unfortunately the flags didn't lead directly to the ruins, the ground having shifted greatly due to the quake. When Hendersen finally found his way to the ruins he was in shock at what he saw. There was nothing there. Just piles of rubble where there once stood the remains of several buildings.

"Dr. Jackson! Major CarŠter!" He called choking slightly on the dust that hung in the air. Clearing his throat he tried again several times moving through the ruins not receiving a response.

"Cap'n. I don't see Dr. Jackson or Major Carter anywhere nor am I getting a response." Hendersen reported to his CO.

"Start looking. Teal'c will be there shortly. He's up and fine. Michaels and I are headed back to the ŚGate see if we can't get some help." Sunez explained as he helped the Lt. to his feet.

"Roger that sir." Hendersen secured his radio in his vest pocket and took out his

Leather work gloves and pulling them on to protect his hands.

Daniel regained consciousness slowly. He hurt. It hurt not matter what he did or didn't do. He opened his blue eyes slowly letting them adjust to the dim light. He was laying on his side and he could see the setting sun casting beautiful colors across the alien sky. But nothing was beautiful about his current situation buried under a ton of debris that had perhaps once been some type of sanctuary.

ŚSam!'

She had been standing right next to him when it all came tumbling down. He remembered her yelp of surprise when they were knocked to the ground. Daniel tried to look around but did not succeed his effort hampered by the rubble. Deciding that it was as good of time as ever to see if he could still speak.

"Sa'am" it came out as more of a croak then anything so Daniel tried again.

"Teal'c!" Daniel tried to yell. He had been trying to get Sam's attention and had stopped when he heard the sounds of rock being moved and voices along with it.

"Danieljackson?" Teal'c perked up hearing his name. "Where are you located?"

"Teal'c over here." Daniel tried to make his voice louder. He continued to talk until he was greeted by the large man that he called his friend.

"Do not worry Danieljackson you are not trapped to severely. Do you know the location of MajorCarter?" Teal'c asked waving Hendersen over to his location. It would take both men to lift the large slab of wall that was on top of Daniel.

"She was right next to me when the quake hit." Daniel grunted as the pressure temporarily increased as the large slab of rock was removed.

"Found her!" Hendersen announced when the slab of stone was removed. Sam was behind Daniel near his feet. The slab had narrowly missing her head.

"Clear away the rubble while I help DanielJackson." Teal'c instructed as he started to clear the larger rocks first.

"Did Major Carter succeed in finding O'Neill?" Teal'c asked as he cleared the last of the rock away and helped Daniel sit up slowly.

"JACK!!" Daniel tried to get up but fell right back down as the pain made itself known.

"DanielJackson you must calm yourself." Teal'c said patiently .

Taking a few deep breaths Daniel tried again. "Jack... he was in a cave. We had talked to his right before it hit."

"Where is this cave?" Teal'c pressed a wad of gauze to the wound on Daniel's head.

"Colonel said two or three miles. Half way up the Hill." Sam piped in quietly. While Hendersen had cleared away the rubble Sam was still trapped laying on her side.

"Sgt. Hendersen! Teal'c!" Captain Sunez came over the radio having returned bringing two SG teams and a med team including Dr. Fraiser.

"Read ya Captain."

"Have you found Dr. Jackson, Major Carter and Colonel O'Neill?" Sunez asked as he directed people where to go.

"We have successfully located both MajorCarter and DanielJackson. O'Neill's whereabouts are still unknown." Teal'c answered instead.

"Okay we'll make our way to the ruins hang tight. Brought the Doc along too."

Janet's head popped up at the mention of ŚDoc'. The name that Colonel O'Neill had started. It bothered her at first but she soon learned that it was a symbol of respect for the person who had patched them up on more then one occasion.

"How are they?" Janet asked coming up on Sunez's side as they walked.

"Pretty banged up but not to bad Doc." Hendersen answered.

"What about the Colonel?"

"Haven't found him yet. Major Carter said that he was about halfway up the hill in some kind of cave. Been waiting for you guys to get here before going up."

"Okay. Hang tight, be there shortly."

Twenty minutes later the two SG teams led by Sunez arrived at the site of the ruins. Janet and her med team quickly relieved Sgt Hendersen and Teal'c and started to look over Sam and Daniel.

"We should depart as soon as possible." Teal'c announced grabbing his staff weapon as he rose to his feet.

"Sir, it's gonna be dark soon." Said Major Lawson, the CO of SG- 9.

"We must get to O'Neill." Teal'c stated forcefully.

"Teal'c I know how much you want to get to the Colonel," Janet said calmly "But you won't do him any good if you get hurt fumbling around in the dark."

Teal'c remained silent for a moment before nodding in agreement. Silently he helped SG-9 set up camp and prepare to head out at first light. Janet and the med team took Sam and Daniel back to the gate so that their injuries could be attended to properly on Earth. They would return again in the morning.

Gradually consciousness returned to Jack and with it came the pain. He had no idea how long he had been out. His entire body was screaming. It didn't take long before he found that he wasn't going anywhere. He couldn't move his legs, his right arm and his left arm didn't respond to his commands very well either. It felt like a brick house had landed on his chest and his head was pounding so hard it, felt as if it was going to burst.

Jack opened his eyes slowly blinking away the dust that was still settling, unsure of what to expect. He couldn't see anything in the pitch black. Jack desperately searched with his left hand for his flashlight, hoping that it wasn't damaged too severely. He sighed in relief when it turned on shedding light on his situation. Jack hated the dark. Ever since his time in Iraq; he couldn't stand to be in the dark.

Jack raised his head cursing as the pounding increased. He could see that he was correct about that brick house. A slab of rock that once belonged to the ceiling had come down right on top of him. His right arm was twisted beneath him, stretching the muscles in his shoulder and arm to the limit. The smaller rocks were packed tightly around him, offering him no chance to escape. Jack carefully lowered his head back down, closing his eyes as he waited for the pain to subside.

It had rained throughout the night not letting up until after dawn. It was making the journey up the hill all that more difficult. There were currently three full SG teams plus the remainder of SG-5 and Teal'c attempting to climb the treacherous slope. They were walking next to each other half an arm length apart hoping to find the cave that Jack had mentioned.

They were a quarter of the way up the hill when an aftershock hit sending half of them to the muddy ground. It lasted all of thirty seconds. After everyone had recovered and were ready they began again.

Second Lieutenant David Carlson from SG-4 trudged along with everyone else. He had been involved in Search and Rescue mission similar to this before. He had been a member of a search and rescue squad in Oregon before he joined the Air Force after college. After hard rains it wasn't uncommon for hill slides and rock fall to occur. More often then not some unlucky person was caught up in one and S&R was called up to get them out. "Major Ferretti! Sir!" Carlson ran up to his commander who was sliding in the mud.

"What is it Carlson?" Ferretti asked as he looked up, halting a moment from slogging up the slope through the thick black clay-like soil.

"Tracker signal sir. Can't we track Colonel O'Neill's signal? If his radio is still on and operational, it might make it easier to find him." Carlson explained in a hurry tripping over his words.

"Good thinking Carlson." Ferretti answered after a minute. "Stevens, see if you can't pick up Colonel O'Neill's signal and track it."

"Major Ferretti, I've got a signal sir!" Stevens shouted over to his commander.

"Well lead on Mcduff." Sunez ordered from his position next to Ferretti.

Jack jerked awake groaning in pain. The battery in his flashlight was gradually dying taking the light with it. With no way to tell time Jack had no idea how long he had been there. His head was feeling a little bit better though, the drummer having let up some as he slept.

"Must have rained." Jack said aloud as he tried to shift his position. Water was trickling out from the between the rocks on his right side. His back was soaked and it was running into his ear as it trickled by his head.

It wasn't long before Jack felt the beginning of another aftershock that progressively increases in strength Jack braced himself as things began to shift. The slab of rock that had taken up residence on his chest and lower body shifted, pressing on his chest even more.

The water increased coming through the gapes between the rocks, allowing more water to flow through. The shaking became more violent and Jack felt another rib give way under the immense pressure. The smaller rocks that were once packed tightly together began to loosen and shift, most of them away from Jack, creating even more pressure on his chest. But his awareness of the situation soon came to an end as a small rock fell from above him, striking his temple.

"Dr. Jackson! What are you doing out of bed?" Janet demanded, as she caught Daniel trying to get dressed. Daniel had been lucky and escaped with relatively minor injuries. Some bruised ribs a dislocated shoulder, and quite a few stitches to go along with his concussion.

"I have to help! I have to help find Jack!" Daniel pleaded. The frustration present in his eyes spoke volumes of the worry for his friend.

"Look Daniel. I know that you want to go and help. But you won't do the Colonel any good if you go out there and get hurt even worse." Janet explained helping him back on to his bed.

"But JanetŠ" Daniel whined. He needed to be doing something, anything but lying around in an infirmary bed waiting to find out whether or not his best friend, no brother, was dead or alive.

"Daniel I understand. I truly do! But look at your self." Janet waved her hand at him. "You're in no condition to be out there climbing a hill and removing rocks. You'll only make your self worse and the Colonel wouldn't want that. Now promise me that you will stay here."

"I promise Janet." Daniel answered seeing the logic in her words. He wouldn't be bale to be there for Jack if he was hurt and unable to get out of bed.

"Alright. If you try any more stunts I'll sedate you, no questions asked." She gave him one last stern look before leaving.

"Janet, any word on the Colonel?" Sam asked as soon as she saw her friend.

"None yet and hold still." Janet admonished. Sam's left arm was broken and one of the RNs was putting a cast on it.

"And I'm gonna give you the same lecture that I just gave to Daniel. You are not to leave your bed. You aren't in much better shape then he is and you will not help the Colonel if you go out and get hurt worse while trying to help.

"Okay but you will tell us as soon as you hear something right?" Sam gave Janet a pleading look.

"Yes as soon as I know something I'll pass it on." Janet agreed laying a comforting hand on her friend's shoulder before continuing on her way to her office.

Once in her office Janet sunk into her chair and buried her head in her folded arms on her desk. She was supposed to pick up Cassie from school and she would know right away that something was wrong with her favorite people.

They had been making slow progress up the muddy slope sometimes finding themselves knee or hip deep in mud. The second aftershock had sent the S&R team scrambling to get out of the way as rocks came tumbling down the hill.

"Everyone all right?" Ferretti asked as he tried to pull himself up out of the black mud.

"Looks like it." Sunez answered watching as everyone was getting up and regaining their balance. "Stevens you still have that signal?"

"No sir! I lost it right as the aftershock hit." Stevens shouted back.

"How close were we?" Ferretti said making his way over to Stevens.

"Not even a quarter mile sir. Colonel O'Neill is probably around here somewhere." Ferretti nodded then went back to confer with Sunez.

"Carlson did we grab any infrared equipment?" Sunez asked a minute later.

"Yes sir. We're working on it right now." Carlson looked up from where he was showing a sergeant what to do.

"General, any word?" Dr. Janet Frazier asked coming into the control room. General Hammond was standing at the bay windows awaiting word on one of his favorite officers and second-in-command.

"No word Doctor. How is the rest of SG-1?"

"They'll be fine. Both are asleep at the moment. Siler offered to pick up Cassie after school today and bring her here. She'll be upset when she finds out."

"And Lt. Michaels from SG-5?"

"Ankle's broken. Be off active duty for a while. He's also asleep. I threatened to sedate them all if they didn't. All three of them wanted to be out there looking for the Colonel."

"The Colonel has more friends then he will ever know." General Hammond said softly.

"Yes sir he certainly does." Janet nodded her head solemnly in agreement.

The search and rescue group had split up into three teams. Lt. Carlson, Sergeant Tim Adcox, and Teal'c: each leading a team since they knew how to work the infrared equipment.

"Over here!" An airman yelled.

"What is it Culbertson?" Ferretti shouted

"Looks like an opening. And I can see a booted foot." He answered.

Ferretti took off running as fast as he could to Culbertson's position. When he got there he shined his flashlight down the opening that the airman had pointed out.

"Teal'c come over here see if you can't help us get this rock out of the way." Sunez yelled right above Ferretti's head causing him to wince.

Jack was slipping in and out of consciousness. It was getting hard for him to breathe as the time passed. He vaguely remembered the ground shaking and rock striking his head knocking him out. The water had stopped flowing but was still covering him, soaking his clothes and he was shivering as the coldness seeped into him.

O'Neill took stock of his situation and found that the rocks had shifted during the aftershock freeing his right arm and trapping his left arm. There was still the slab of rock pressing down on his chest and legs. Tentatively, Jack tried to move his left arm, but found that he couldn't. Trying his right arm, he gasped with the pain that it caused. Then very faintly Jack thought that he could hear voices. But he couldn't make them out.

"On Three. 1Š2Š3!" Sunez counted down. Teal'c, Sunez, Ferretti, and several other men were trying to push the rock down the hill away from Jack. They pushed against it for a minute or two before they stopped. It hadn't budged and inch.

"I have an idea. I will return shortly." Teal'c said evenly walking towards a patch of woods. When he returned he had several very strong looking branches.

"For leverage." Teal'c said as he handed each man a branch.

"Good thinking Teal'c." Ferretti complimented positioning his branch in place.

"Once more. On three 1Š2Š3!"

The branches worked giving them just enough leverage to get the rock to move.

Jack felt the slab that was on top of his chest shift slightly. The motion created more pressure then finally the awful force let up allowing him to breath easier. And he could hear the same voices again. He recognized Ferretti and Teal'cs voices immediately. He wanted to yell out and tell them that he was here, but every time he tried to nothing came out of his mouth. He heard them counting again. And then the pressure was back stealing his breath away. The pressure was gone almost as soon as it came and Jack O'Neill screamed from the pain. He screamed until he was allowed to slip back in to unconsciousness.

***SGC***

"Mom what happened?" Cassie asked walking into the infirmary followed by Siler who had picked her up from school. "Are they okay?"

"Come on Cassie I'll explain." Janet waved her over to her office.

Five minutes later a sniffling Cassie sat next to Sam on her bed. Daniel was dozing. He had woken up earlier to hear that there was no new news and went back to sleep.

"Cassie, the Colonel will be all right. Teal'c and Ferretti are looking for him. They'll find him." Sam pulled Cassie against her with her good arm.

"What if he's not okay? What if he's not lucky this time?"

"Cassie if there is one thing that I have learned about the Colonel is that if you don't give up on him, he won't give up on you. He has too much damned Irish luck. It gets him into trouble and out."

"Dr. Frazier!" Sergeant Hendersen yelled, running into the infirmary.

"What is it Sergeant?" Janet asked

"Colonel O'NeillŠWe've found himŠneed youŠcome!" Hendersen got out between gulps of air.

"Larsen get me my field kit." Janet ordered as she rushed to leave.

"Ma'am we're leaving in fifteen minutes. " Hendersen told her once he caught his breath. "Colonel O'Neill's buried under some rock. They're trying to free him now."

"I'll be in the Gateroom in ten." Janet told Hendersen before walking over to tell Sam, Daniel and Cassie.

"Colonel O'Neill!" Sunez called one last time. They had managed to move most of the rock that had Jack trapped. All but the large slab that still sat on top of him.

"How long before Frazier and the transport team get here?" Sunez asked backing away from the hole that had exposed Jack's head and upper torso.

"Shouldn't be to long. Hendersen was dialing the gate as I talked to him on the radio. The ATVs will make it quicker."

"We will still not be able to move Colonel O'Neill until morning." Teal'c stated. It was already dark on the planet. Bright floodlights had been rigged to light up the area so that they could continue working through out the night.

"Then we will get that last piece of debris out of here so that we can get him out of here as soon as possible." Said Ferretti taking a drink from his canteen as he walked over to talk to Carlson.
