Author's Notes: No this was not inspired by babysitting. And I apologize to Jackie, Sandra W., Auntie Cornie, Mum, Aniko, and the others that this isn't the other fic. But I was working on that one when I wrote this one. Does that count?? Debic told me "tie yourself to the computer and stare at the screen" I did that and this came out as well as the challenge. Thanx Tadooh for the beta. Anyways enough rambling on with the story!

One of Those days by crash

You ever had one of those days that just wouldn't end? That seemed to just get worse and worse as the day wears on?

Well, today was one of those days.

I seem to have more of them since I took command of the Stargate project.

One thing after another just kept coming. From the calls from the Pentagon and JCS, arguments between airmen and marines, and problems with teams that were offworld- it just wouldn't stop. Three teams came back with injuries and two people lost their lives.

At least it ended on a good note however, when SG-3 returned with all the missing members of SG-4 intact.

And now I'm finally going home, to see my grandchildren. I was supposed to be spending this afternoon with them. I was going to make it a half day and take them to the park then dinner and a movie. Jack would have joined us too. Kayla and Tessa would have made sure of that. SG-1's out on medical leave and Jack was, still is, watching the girls. They love him to death and them some.

I called him last night after the usual babysitter wasn't able to watch them. He was happy to help out and the girls were thrilled. They had already asked if he could come to the park and movies with them. Dr. Jackson brought him by the house this morning. Jack was looking better then the last time I saw him when he was released from the infirmary after a two week stay. During their last mission, Jack was beaten up pretty bad and was shot in the belly.

He still wasn't even close to 100%. The pajama type pants that slung low on his waist and the loose long sleeve shirt proved the point. It didn't stop him though. I'd left him out in the backyard playing with the girls as much as his injuries allowed. He'd seemed happy. Jack O'Neill truly happy is a rare event. The few times I've seen it have been during moments with his team or with children.

Pulling into the driveway I'm surprised to see my son's car off to the side and most of the lights out. As I get out of my car I can see the TV reflecting on the walls of the lounge and a faint light from the kitchen. Glancing at my watch, I see it's after nine. Walking up to the front porch, I check the mailbox only to discover that someone has already collected the mail.

I slowly open the door not only because the solid oak door creaks rather loudly, but also because my granddaughters like to coming running up to me when I arrive. No matter what time it is. I set my briefcase down outside the hall closet, hang my coat up, and place my cover on the shelf inside. I hear the voices of my son and his wife softly floating out of the kitchen as I make my way down the entrance hall.

"Hi, Dad. Finally made it home." Mike gives me a warm smile as he walks over and we embrace in a quick hug.

"It was one helluva day," I say, placing a kiss on my daughter-in-law Laurie's cheek

"We stopped by earlier so that you could see Lee before we left to visit Laurie's

mum tomorrow," Mike explained. "Jack said that you were stuck at the base. And that he was watching the girls until you got back."

"Yeah, I was only supposed to be there this morning. I had planned on taking the girls to the park, get some dinner, and a movie."

"Jack looked tired so I made some dinner while Mike ran the girls to Blockbuster. I saved you a plate in the fridge, Dad" Laurie said as she placed the mugs that she and Mike were drinking coffee from in the sink.

"Thank you very much," I tell her sincerely, hugging her around the shoulders as I collect a cup of coffee for myself

"You're very welcome. I like Jack. He's sweet, kind, funny, and is great with the kids"

"Except for the kids part are you sure we are talking about the same Colonel Jack O'Neill?" I ask her raising an eyebrow that would make Teal'c proud and earning a chuckle from both her and Mike.

"So where are the kids?"

"In the lounge. After dinner we watched one of the movies that Kayla and Tessa got at Blockbuster. Then, when you still weren't back, Jack told them that they could have a Śslumber party'. So they dragged their sleeping bags out and have been watching cartoon network for the lastŠ oh 45 minutes or so," Laurie told me as she led the way to the lounge.

Sure enough, there they were. Kayla and Tessa were sleeping on the floor, curled up in their sleeping bags. Kayla snuggling with her stuffed rabbit and Tessa with her bear, the one that Jack gave her when she had to get her tonsils out.

Jack was stretched out on the couch, His head resting on a pillow at one end, his feet sticking off the other, looking very relaxed and comfortable. And there, sleeping on Colonel Jack "Hardass" O'Neill's chest was 18 month old Lee. And on top of them was Tessa's blanket that she must have spread over them. The girls take care of their "Colonel Jack" just as their Grandpa tried to do.

"I don't want to wake them," Laurie whispered pointing at Jack and Lee. "He looked so peaceful. Both of them."

"You're more then welcome to take one of the spare rooms. I'm not bothering Jack. He needs all the sleep he can get." I tell them knowing that this will be one of the few nights that Jack will ever get that is not haunted with nightmares.

"Thanks, Dad. We're not leaving until late tomorrow. Want to get up and have breakfast together?"

"Sounds good." Carefully, I make my way over to the TV turning it off and turning on a small lamp in the corner. Just enough light in case someone woke up in the middle of the night.

"Evening, General."

Only years of training keep me from jumping at the sound of the soft scratchy voice.

"Evening, Colonel. I didn't mean to leave you here this long," I explain, making my way toward the couch. Harder then you think with two girls in the middle of the floor.

"S'okay, sir. Had a good time." Jack smiles sleepily, his eyes drifting closed again.

"Wore you out, did they?" I ask, kneeling next to the couch rubbing a hand gently on my grandson's back.

"Uh huh." His eyes open again, slowly. I doubt he'll remember talking to me in the morning. His eyes drift to the child sleeping on his chest.

"Apparently someone thinks I make a good pillow," he comments with a crooked grin, before falling back asleep.

"Good night, Jack," I say, patting his shoulder. Standing back up, I make my way out of the lounge, stopping to kiss each of my granddaughters good night.

"He's special, isn't he?" Laurie asks as she moves to follow Mike up the stairs.

"More then he will ever know."
