So Close No Matter How Far

Jack leaned back staring up at the dark blue velvet sky over head. The stars shined back him brighter then he could ever remember seeing before. A calm feeling washed over him, one that only came from staring at the stars. He felt his body relax despite the turmoil of his thoughts and emotions.

Three months. Give or take a couple of days. That's how long he had been here. Away from his home; Away from his colleagues and friends; Away from his family, SG1. He missed them, all of them even Makepeace and his Marines. With every beat of his heart he thought of them.

He had been left behind alone. No one had waited for him. He had ordered them to get through the Gate. And they had, just like he told them. He decided to stick with the thought that his team, his family had made it through the Gate on Earth. But there was a small part of him that wished someone had waited for him. Even now, knowing the Stargate was either destroyed or buried didn't stop that small part of him from wishing that he wasn't here all alone on Edora. A stranger in a strange land.

Jack closed his eyes, squeezing them tight trying to stop the moisture from seeping out. Opening his eyes again he returned his thoughts back to the sky. Itıs velvet appearance now blurry from the tears. The constellations, though not the same ones he was accustomed to, were comforting.

The stars were something that hadn't changed in the last couple of months. They had stayed constant through the chaotic adapting to life on Edora. Despite all the changes he had to go through he could still layback and lose himself in the stars. Laira had taught him some of the constellations and Jack pointed out some that resembled the ones he knew.

But Jack had named a few of his own, ones that he told no one else about. One for each team member, Janet, Cassie, Hammond and his family, and one for Charlie and Sara. It was his way of keeping them with him.

He had picked their stars out during the second week as he lay in the middle of the field behind Laira's house. Nightmares had been plaguing him that week, images of that fateful mission in Iraq crept up every time he closed his eyes. Not wanting to disturb the other people sleeping he had waited quietly until all were asleep before slipping out. That night he had designated a star for each of them.

It still seemed like yesterday he was spending the evening digging where the gate used to be. Three long hard tiring months of seemingly non-stop work to get the village back up and running. All that time hardly a minute went by that he didn't think about Earth and what he had there. Jack heaved another sigh, not minding the few tears that escaped.

Edora wasn't so bad. It was beautiful, the people were warm and welcoming, even Paynan once you go to know him. They had accepted him as part of their village and their family. Maybe it was time that he accepted them fully into his life as well.

One hundred days. That was a long time. For the Edorans life had moved on. They accepted the fact that they may never see their friends and family, who had left through the gate, again. Maybe it was time that Jack did the same; to move on and accepted that Earth was lost to him.

Jack's eyes stayed fixated on the sky. Silently pleading that he could find his answer. That his family, would some how tell him what to do.
