BROKEN DREAMS
It had finally happened. Daniel knew that it was always going to be the pits when it did. It wasn't his fault, he'd tried really hard to prevent it. But sooner or later, it just had to.
Jack was going to be pissed. Just cause he was always ragging on the youngest member of his team, just cause he had predicted it, just cause he could. Sam would shake her head and turn away so that she wouldn't have to witness her psuedo-sibling's embarrassment and dismay. Teal'c, well Daniel wasn't sure Teal'c could appreciate his situation since being a symbiote-carrying Jaffa had prevented anything like this from EVER happening to him.
It had started back at the infirmary at SGC. He'd gone to pick them up, but they weren't ready. I seemed that he'd ordered them on Friday but the requests had been sent in Thursday. 'Sorry, Dr. Jackson. They'll be in next week. Promise. No, we can't call them in special. You'll just have to be careful.'
Careful! HA! Careful. He'd been careful. At one point he'd even packed them away safely in their carrying case, out of the reach of Unasus (unai?), Jaffas, Goa'ulds, monkeys, earthquakes, mudslides, and meteorites. But the laws of nature and the universe were against him. There's no telling what kind of nickname this would accrue on his long list of Spacemonkey, plantboy, geek, etc. And worst of all, this was his trip.
He'd picked it for himself when he'd seen the MALP's videos. Even Jack had agreed it was his best opportunity for studying the different variations of architectural styles and their importance of and to ancient cultures. . And he'd really looked forward to this assignment. There were actually three pyramids here, of different styles no less. The classic Egyptian, the Sumerian ziggurat and the Central American Step.
If the scripts in all three were Goa'uld, it would be a major breakthrough. If the writing differed into the text of the representative cultures it would be mind-boggling. But now it was all for naught. It was humiliating! Worse it was debilitating. He wouldn't be able to do his job! He was useless to himself, his team and the SGC.
"What do you mean, you broke them? For crying out loud, Daniel. I told you to be careful!"
"I know Jack. I was careful! I even put them in a case in my shirt pocket when we climbed down the last cliff-face so I wouldn't break them."
Teal'c even stood up for him. "It is true, O'Neill. I observed him. He did his best to protect them."
"Well then, what happened?" His OIC questioned him.
"When that tree that you were holding onto broke off from the cliff face and I grabbed your hand... I must have fallen on them."
"Oh, then. Well, I can't complain. I guess I'd rather it be them than me." Jack sighed. "So it's a no go, huh?"
"Sorry, Jack. Maybe if Sam took some video I could do it back at the base." He replied red-faced and humiliated.
"It's Okay, Daniel. I don't mind." She looked back and forth between the Colonel and his mortified friend and teammate. "Just show me what you want."
"Sam, if I could show you what I want, I wouldn't need you to do it. I'm just..."
She patted him on the shoulder. "It's okay; I'll try to guess right."
"Thanks, Sam. You're a sweetheart." He could just barely make out her expression before she turned and walked towards 'his' pyramids.
Jack put his hand on his best friend's shoulder. "Now, tell me again. Who wouldn't call in your order for that extra set of glasses?"
