…….try and get some sleep
by Kazza
“He’s not fine.” Daniel took his glasses off, fiddled with them and put them back on. “You only have to look at him to tell.”
Sam sank down into one of the chairs in the Pel’tak. “Daniel, I know that and you know that. He was suffering from anoxia when we got to him and probably now has the headache from hell at the moment. But we are stuck in the middle of nowhere and it’s going to take us at least a day to get to planet with a safe Stargate. So what do you suggest we do?”
She took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so harsh. It’s just been a long day.”
He gave a small shrug. “Tell me about it.”
Jacob, sitting in the pilot chair, looked at the two of them and grinned. “Have you both finished?”
Both heads swiveled in his direction with matching annoyed expressions and he had to suppress a laugh. “Jack is feeling very tired and very cold. He has a headache to beat all headaches but nothing that’s going to kill him. He’s now wrapped in half a dozen blankets and fast asleep with his own personal bodyguard, Teal’c, watching over him. So quit worrying.”
“He and Teal’c nearly died today, dad. It’s not something that can be dismissed so lightly.” Sam clearly wasn’t impressed with Jacob’s view.
Daniel nodded in agreement. “If we had been any longer, we would have been bringing back their bodies.”
“Will you two just cut it out.” Jacob shook his head in disbelief. “Have you heard yourselves? Mr and Mrs Gloom and Doom. Lighten up. Jack and Teal’c are alive and that’s that. Now all we’ve got to worry about is persuading this heap of junk not to conk out before we get to a Stargate.”
*
Teal’c watched as his eyes flickered open and he immediately reached for the water bottle.
“O’Neill?”
Jack shifted his head to look at his friend and then with a grimace pulled himself up into a sitting position, leaning against the wall for support. “I guess we’re not home yet then?” He indicated to the typical gold walls of the Goa’uld ship.
Teal’c handed him the bottle. “Indeed, we remain on the Tok’ra ship. You have only slept for three hours.” He watched as Jack drank some of the water. “MajorCarter requested that I ask if you required food when you awoke.”
Jack put the bottle down and shook his head, immediately regretting that action as it caused a fresh wave of pain. “Tell Major Carter that it’s not a slur against her culinary skills but at the moment I think I’ll stick to water. I don’t think my stomach could handle an MRE.” He sniffed at his clothes. “And I take it not only did they forget the aspirin, they also forgot spare clothes?”
Teal’c dipped his head slightly. “Indeed.”
“Great.” He shifted again back into a lying position, wrapping the blankets around himself tightly. “I guess I’ll try and sleep again.”
*
The grinding noise sounded alarming and as Daniel and Sam exchanged glances of ‘oh oh’ the ship shuddered and dropped out of hyperspace.
“Dad?”
Jacob swore under his breath and then looked at his daughter. “Hey, look on the bright side, at least this time we not in the bad side of town.”
She folded her arms across her chest and glowered. “That’s not funny. Can you fix it?”
Jacob hurried past her. “I’m just going to find out. Wanna come?”
*
“What was that?” Jack looked at Daniel groggily. “That didn’t sound healthy.” He began struggling to his feet. “We’ve stopped moving.”
“Sam and Jacob will sort it.” Daniel caught hold of Jack’s arm as he began walking across the cargo bay. “Just give them a few minutes. Besides, Teal’c has just gone to find out what’s going on.” He tried to steer Jack back to his makeshift bed. “Why don’t you lie back down and……”
Jack pulled his arm free. “Daniel, don’t patronise me. My brain may have been starved of oxygen for a little while but I’m pretty sure I still have some of the old grey matter left.”
“That’s debatable.” He muttered it under this breath but Jack had always had sharp hearing and he glared at Daniel.
Daniel blushed but didn’t give up. “Look, Jack, let’s just wait for Teal’c to report back before you decide to jump in gung ho.”
Jack’s shoulders sagged and allowed Daniel to help him back over to the enticing warmth of the blankets. “I am not gung ho.”
*
All but a few of the crystals were burnt out and Jacob carefully replaced the ones that he could before sitting back on his haunches, a worried look on his face. “Okay.” He slid the panel closed.
Sam, the burnt crystals in her hands, frowned. “Dad?”
He straightened up and shook his head. “We’re going to have to slow down. If any more crystals burn out then we’re stranded.” He swept his arm around the small engine room. “This is an old ship, Sam. Unlike the Goa’uld we don’t have brand new shiny ships and this one was only meant to short hops. I strained the engines to limit to get to Jack and Teal’c in time and now we’re paying the price.”
“So how much longer will that add onto our time?”
He shrugged. “Another twelve hours or so.”
*
“See?” Daniel sat down on the floor next to Jack. “I told you that Jacob and Sam would be able to sort it out.” The noise on the engines humming was a welcome sound.
“Yeah, great Danny.” Jack eyes had drifted closed again. “Wake me up when we got home.”
*
“He’s asleep again.” Daniel strode into the Pel’tak and then noted the glum expressions. “Okay…..what’s the problem.”
Sam scrubbed her hand across her face, feeling the fatigue. “We’ve had to slow it down. It’ll be another 28 hours before we reach a Stargate.”
He stared out of the viewing window at the empty expanse of space. “That’s not good news.” He turned back round to look at them. “So who’s going to tell Jack?”
*
Teal’c was sitting in a corner of the cargo bay performing Kel’no’reem, Jacob was given Sam an engineering lesson coming flying lesson in the Pel’tak, Jack was still sleeping and Daniel……well, he was bored.
Fifteen hours had passed in which he’d slept for a while, taken a watch in the Pel’tak and now he had nothing to do. Sitting on the floor in the cargo bay, he looked at the sleeping figure of Jack and resisted the urge to wake him up for some company. Sighing deeply, he began drumming his fingers on the floor.
“Jeez, Daniel, some of us are trying to sleep.” The voice made him jump and he looked across at Jack apologetically.
“Sorry.”
Jack sat up. “Don’t sweat it, I’ve been awake for a while.” He pressed the palms of his hand to his forehead.
Daniel scooted across the floor to sit next to him. “Still bad?” He hunted around for the water bottle. Locating it, he pulled his bandanna out of his back pocket and soaked it in the cool water. “Here.” He pulled Jack’s hands away and replaced them with the cool feeling of the bandanna. “I know it’s not aspirin but it’s the best I can do.”
Jack rested his head against the wall. “How much longer are we going to be on this damn ship?”
Daniel took a quick glance at his watch. “Eight hours give or take.”
“Sweet.” Jack closed his eyes briefly and then opened them again. “Look, I really don’t mean to sound ungrateful or anything and I know what you guys did to rescue me and the big guy. It’s just this headache is probably registering as ten times as brutal as that one we both had on Plant world.”
Daniel screwed his face up in sympathy. “Ouch.” He remember that headache and the vow that he never wanted to experience another one like that in his lifetime. “Why don’t you…….”
“Please don’t’ tell me to try and sleep again. If you do I may be…….” He stopped as the ship began to make that same grinding noise.
*
“It’s okay.” Jacob turned to look as Daniel and rather unsteady looking Jack appeared in the Pel’tak. “It’s nothing to worry about.”
“Well, you know me and my problem with trusting what the Tok’ra say.” Jack shuffled the room. “So if it’s not a problem, why are the engines making that sound?”
Sam leapt out of her chair and nodding his thanks, Jack took her place. “And no technical bullshit, please.”
“Sir, as long as we don’t push the engines we should make P3X 599 within the next four hours and we are watching the engines very carefully.” Sam eyed her CO carefully. “Why don’t you try to……”
“Enough!” He winced as the sound of his own voice made his head pound. “What’s with this why don’t you try to sleep. I’ve been sleeping for the past god knows how long. I have a headache not a fatigue problem!” His eyes narrowed. “In fact, Major, when did you last sleep?”
Sam shifted from foot to foot, looking uncomfortable. “Um, I got a couple of hours of sleep a while back.”
Jack looked triumphant. “Well, Major, why don’t you try to get some sleep.” He watched as she opened her mouth to protest and he waggled his finger at her. “That’s an order.”
Jacob shook his head and grinned as his daughter practically stomped out of the room and into the cargo bay. “Neatly twisted around, Colonel.”
Jack slumped back in the seat. “Years of practice, Jacob.”
*
It had never been a more beautiful sight as the planet loomed up on the horizon and even Jack began to feel better. Fifteen minutes later and the Tok’ra ship was on the ground, just fifty yards from the Stargate.
With Teal’c and Daniel hovering behind him should he stumble, Jack stepped out of the cloying atmosphere of the ship and breathed in the fresh air. “Hallelujah.” He raised his face up to the gentle breeze, the coolness feeling like heaven on his face.
“Come on, Jack. Time for some aspirin.” Daniel gave him a slight nudge on his arm.
*
Both General Hammond and Dr Fraiser were standing at the bottom of the metal ramp as SG-1 and Jacob emerged from the wormhole. Jack, on seeing the doctor, did something totally out of character. “Doc,” he almost ran down the ramp, “am I pleased to see you.” He draped his arm over her shoulder. “Boy, are you a sight of sore eyes and a sore head.”
Janet looked at him in shock. “Sir?”
Sam handed her P90 to a waiting airman and looked at General Hammond. “Sir, I believe what the Colonel is trying to tell Dr Fraiser is that he’s in dire need of something for his headache.”
Hammond stifled a snort and smiled instead. “Welcome home SG-1.” He shook hands with Jacob. “And it’s good to see you, Jacob.”
Jacob shrugged. “Well, you know, I was in the neighbourhood.”
*
He stared at the two pills that were nestled in the palm of his hand, savouring the moment and then, with Janet looking on in amusement, he popped them in his mouth and washed them down with a glass of water.
“Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for that, doc?”
Janet took the glass from him and gently pushed him down onto the bed. “I can only imagine. Normally you’d run a mile when I suggest a night in the infirmary.” She pulled a blanket up over him. “Now, is there anything you need, sir?”
He shook his head, sinking back into the comfortable pillows. “Nope, I think that I’ll listen to my team now and try and get some sleep.”
With a grin he closed his eyes.
