Letters to Charlie: Promises, Promises.

by Magicsunbeam

As Sara watches grinning, I carefully pick up the tiny bundle.

"Hey, Charlie O'Neill. Welcome to your world." I greet my son, softly.

As I look down into the big, brown, unfocused eyes I have to smile. I know those eyes don't recognise me, but in time they will.

This day was planned. It was something we both wanted, from as soon as we were married. Neither of us could see our house as a home without at least five kids tearing the place up. Sara always loved kids, we both do. She's going to be a great Mom.

I watch her with my brother's kids and admit, at times feel a bit jealous. The kids love her too. She's funny, interesting and interested, she's easy going, yet fair and firm, she can keep the kids going long after most folks would have called a halt to the game. Most importantly, or so it seems, she pays attention to what they say. I must remember that. I would love to have a relationship like that, to be trusted so completely as she is, must be a precious gift to have bestowed on you.

Sara told me about her pregnancy when I got home from work. I remember we were so excited, dinner was forgotten and neither of us got much sleep as we talked into the small hours about what our new future held.

Sara wanted a boy from the outset and although I did too, I didn't want to say, in case she thought I'd be disappointed if he turned out to be she. Like *that* would ever happen. I remember she laughed and said the reason behind her wanting a son was purely selfish - she wanted *two* men in her life. That was the only thing that was decided on. Turns out my wife is superstitious about certain stuff. She flatly refused to talk about names for the baby or decorating a nursery for fear of `tempting fate`. There was never any danger though, her pregnancy went well and before we knew it, the time was here.

I was sitting up watching a game on T.V. at two this morning, when Sara appeared in the doorway and asked if I cared to take a trip to the hospital with her. I thought at first she was sleep walking and not quite awake, then she gave me a smile and I could see the excitement in her eyes. I couldn't get out the chair fast enough.

All the way to the hospital I gabbled on, trying to watch her and keep the car on the road at the same time. Sara just sat there, calm as you please, with a happy smile on her face. At the hospital I managed to calm down once the doctors took over. Just over eleven hours later - at 13.34 - it was all over.

Our son is here and the enormity of it all is just beginning to dawn on me. It's a scary thought. I hope I'm a good Dad. Oh, I have all the boys' stuff planned. I teach him how to play ball, take him on camping trips, take him to the games and teach the finer points of ice hockey. However, I want to be able to give him good advice on anything he throws at me. From homework to cars, sports to girls. Ha! Girls! Like I could kid myself I know anything about the mysteries of the opposite sex! Maybe there'll be someone further
down the line from now, some one in our future, who can help him out with that one. If not, he'll have to work that one out for himself.

For now, what I *can* do is love him with all that I have and to offer him my protection. I tell him that, holding him close I vow.

"Charlie, I promise, I will not allow anyone or anything to harm you, I promise I will be here for you, I promise I will look after you, but I can only pray to God I will *not* let you down."
