The Next Step.
by Osarisanhur
The restaurant was situated on the bank of a large meandering river. Actually it couldn’t really be called a river because it didn’t go anywhere. It was a gigantic pond made to resemble a river that had been built at the same time as the restaurant. The water was continually pumped around it, steadily flowing, causing the moonlight to glint off it. From their table in the window it was a beautiful sight, but Jack didn’t notice - not tonight.
It had been a good evening; the food was great the company wonderful but Jack was beginning to feel nervous. Could he still go through with this?
Jack paid the bill and helped Janet on with her jacket. As they left the restaurant he took her hand entwining their fingers, his heart skipping a beat as she smiled at him. Yes he could do this. This is what he wanted. He could feel his nervousness building as he led her towards the river. They walked in silence along the bank, the moonlight shining on the water lighting their way as the restaurant receded behind them.
Janet glanced up at the man walking beside her; the man she loved, more than she had ever loved anyone before. She could feel the tremors running through him. He looked worried, edgy but she had no idea why. He’d been fine during dinner, laughing and talking. What had happened, what had she missed?
As they walked hand in hand along the riverbank Janet could sense Jack’s nervousness growing, his hands feeling cold in hers. Her own fear swelled as she watched him. Scared of what was to come. Was this it, was he going to tell her it had all been a mistake? God she hoped not.
Jack knew Janet was watching him. He could feel her eyes on him but he couldn’t look at her - not yet. He needed to get his fear under control first. Christ he was so scared that she wouldn’t want this.
Unable to stand it any longer Janet stopped dead causing Jack to halt a step ahead. He turned to face her, their hands slipping apart and gave her a shaky smile which only managed to add to her tension.
“Jack…what’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
Janet looked at him questioningly. He looked deep into her beautiful brown eyes and knew he could do this. He wanted this more than anything else in his whole life. Taking a deep breath he let it out slowly before continuing.
“You know how much I love you right?”
She nodded her eyes never leaving his. God he felt like a love sick teenager, with his stomach twisting in knots and the urge to run growing stronger every second. No, he could do this. He needed to do this. This was the next step.
“Ah….well I wanted to ask you…”
As he spoke he reached into his jacket pocket. Pulling his hand out he held a small dark blue velvet box sat in his palm. He opened it for her to see.
“…will you marry me Janet?”
Janet stared at the small heart shaped ring, the heart made up of a cluster of small diamonds. It was beautiful. Her eyes filled with tears, this was the last thing that she had expected. Hoped for yes but never expected. She looked up at his anxious face and smiled.
“Yes.”
Her voice was barely a whisper as a single tear escaped and slid slowly down her cheek.
Jack reached out taking her face in his hands, his thumb lightly brushing away the tear, caressing her cheek as he leaned in brushing his lips lightly over hers. Pulling back he took the ring from its box and taking her left hand he gently slipped the ring onto her finger. It fitted perfectly. Jack brushed his lips over the hand wearing his ring before returning his gaze to her face. He smiled and leaned in to capture her lips once again.
He knew he could do it. It felt right. It felt good to know she wanted this too. That he wasn’t alone in his need for commitment. That together they were moving forward. They were taking the next step. A step they both wanted to take.
