Jack slowly opened his eyes, blinking away the sleep. A smile curled his lips as he stretched out his hand across the bed. Reaching out for her as he rolled onto his side to face her. He froze, his smile vanishing as his hand found only emptiness beside him. The bed was cold and unoccupied as it was every night since then. Devastation swept through him, as he realised it had only been another dream. The same one that he had every night.

“I miss you, so much. I wanted to hold you for a lifetime. Wanted to love you forever. Then you were gone. I thought we would grow old together. Right from our very first kiss…..” he whispered into the darkness of his bedroom.

The wind roared in his ears, the noise deafening as the waves crashed over the bay, frothing up, foaming white as they hit the shore before receding back the way they had come.  The full moon sat high in the sky brightly reflecting off the dark fast moving water and illuminating the bay below in a soft silver glow.  She stood there, alone, angry at the world and herself.  Never looking more beautiful to him than she did right now.  He watched her silently as she stared out across the bay, at the town in the distance its lights shining in many colours.  It looked like an enchanted magical kingdom from a kid’s fairytale book.  It was so beautiful.  But unlike in fairytales life didn’t always have a happy ending.  A bird screamed as it flew overhead, swooping and diving in the dark velvet star-studded night sky.  Walking slowly, silently toward the woman standing dejectedly in the bay, he knew tears now filled her eyes.  The beauty of her surroundings did nothing to lift her dark mood.  Suddenly, becoming aware of a presence behind her, she spun around to confront the intruder, only to find it was the Colonel who was standing extremely close.  He was staring at her, concern radiating from him, worry for her.

“You okay?”

Lowering her eyes so he couldn’t see her pain she nodded.

Reaching out his hand, he tilted her chin so that he could look into her eyes.

“No you’re not.”

She closed her eyes in the hope of stopping the tears that threatened to fall. It didn’t work.  A single tear escaped from beneath a shuttered eyelid and slowly rolled down her cheek.  Jack leant forward gently brushing her cheek with soft warm lips, kissing away the lone tear, causing a moan of pleasure to escape from her lips.  Replacing his lips with his hand he caressed her cheek, smiling as she leaned into his touch before his lips covered hers in a sweet gentle kiss before pulling back to look at her. Slowly she opened her eyes, to find herself staring into deep brown pools unable to look away.

“Hi beautiful” he whispered.

Janet gasped as Jack slipped his hand around the back of her neck, his fingers tangled in the soft silky auburn hair as he pulled her close. Their lips met in a gentle kiss, he ran his tongue slowly along Janet’s bottom lip seeking entry, sliding his tongue through parted lips as this beautiful woman moaned into his mouth.  His other hand ran lightly up and down her back, as Janet’s hands came to rest on his waist holding him close.  Their tongues were each exploring the others mouth in turn, until the need for oxygen finally forced them apart.

“I’ve wanted to do that for so long” gasped Jack as he gulped in air, smiling at her before leaning back in. His eyes were closing as he once again claimed Janet’s lips, in a passionate kiss, tasting her, delighting in her touch. Not wanting to stop but having to give in to their serious lack of breath they pulled apart.

Reaching out to stroke her cheek, he ran his thumb over her lips, feeling her tremble at his touch.

He pulled her closer and wrapped his arms around her, as her head came to rest upon his chest.

“It’s not your fault you know.”

“I know, but it still hurts that I couldn’t save him.”

“You’re not God!  You can’t fix everything Janet.”

“He was just a kid, Jack!  A little kid.”

“I know…but kids die too.”

Her head shot up as she pulled back from his embrace, her eyes locked with his, horror passing across her face as she realised the meaning behind Jacks last statement.

“Hey, it’s okay, Janet.”

He pulled her back against him, brushing his lips against the top of her head.  They remained silent just holding each other, taking comfort in each other’s arms.

“We’d better get back before Carter sends out a search party, besides if we stay here any longer, I won’t be responsible for my actions.”  Jack smiled at her before capturing her lips in one last tender kiss.  Pulling back and looking deep into her eyes he asked.

“Can we continue this when we get home?”

“I’d like that,” smiled Janet.

Taking her hand in his, he led her back towards the town.

I really should sleep now, but I know what will happen when I do. And I don’t think I can face it again…it hurts so much to wake up alone.

Every night I close my eyes, and drift off to sleep. To another world I go. One that has been lost to me. Gone forever. And in this other world I have no pain, no sorrow, just joy. And you are there waiting for me. In this place, I hold you in my arms. Feel your soft warm skin beneath my fingers once again. I kiss your sweet lips, taste you, breathe you in. I wrap you in my arms, hold you, touch you, kiss you and love you. And it is real. So very real.

Part way through the night I wake up from this dream, my arms wrapped tightly around your pillow, which is held against my chest. I wake to the reality of my world. And the weight of this loss crushes me once again.

Cassie says, ‘mom wouldn’t want you to be unhappy,’ and I know she’s right. Our friends all tell me I should move on, but I can’t. I know they mean well, but they just don’t understand. How could they?  Only Daniel comprehends the depth of my despair. ‘How many times can one heart break, Jack?  Yours is in so many pieces that it will never mend. Not if you won’t let it.’

I don’t wanna wake up to one more night that won’t end.

Jack brought the hand clasped in his, fingers entwined, up to his lips. He brushed the back of her hand lightly with his lips as his eyes held hers. Her deep brown pools were shining back at him, love radiating from their depths. She smiled and his heart skipped a beat.

He smiled back as the elevator doors slid open. Janet stepped through, and Jack followed a step behind refusing to release her hand. Turning, he reached over, with their entwined hands, to push the button for their floor and watched the doors as they whispered shut. The elevator began to move smoothly up to the next level. Jack glanced at Janet who was standing by his side staring at him.

“What?...”  he laughed.

KABOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM

The elevator stopped dead, throwing them off their feet. The lights died plunging them into total darkness. The silence was deafening after the loud explosion. The elevator shuddered violently, swinging on its cables in the confined space of the shaft, banging against the sides, bouncing and jerking as the rubble cascaded down the shaft from above, covering the top of the elevator along with the hatch, cutting off any means of escape. The occupants were flung around the interior like rag dolls, slamming against the sides to slide down into crumpled heaps on the floor. It had all happened so fast that Jack didn’t have time to think, let alone react.

As the elevator settled, unmoving, Jack began to slowly sit up, mentally checking out his body for injuries.

“Janet…” he called out, concern lacing his voice.

His call was greeted by a groan from opposite him.

He pushed himself up off the floor and took a step towards her. The elevator suddenly lurched, plunging a few feet on its cables. The abrupt descent threw Jack off his feet, sending him backwards to crash on the floor, his head smacking with a force onto the hard surface.

#####

Jack cautiously opened his eyes, confused as to where he was. His head ached, a dull thump making itself known inside his skull as he turned, the memory of what had happened blossomed in his mind along with the pain. As he sat up the dull thump moved up a notch to become a pounding and he felt his stomach rebel against the movement. Jack closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His stomach settled with his lack of motion.

He twisted onto his hands and knees as he opened his eyes. The pain flared behind his eyes and spread rapidly throughout his skull as another wave of nausea swept through him. He closed his eyes once again, swallowing, his reflex action taking over in the fight to quell his defiant stomach. He lost the battle.

His hands came up to clutch his head, the pain in his skull increasing ten fold as he vomited on the floor in front of him. He wiped his mouth with a shaking hand, took a deep breath and pushed himself up off the floor. He found he had to lean against the sidewall as he waited for his stomach to settle once again.

He turned slowly around and made his way across the small space to where Janet lay. He had noticed upon waking that they were no longer in total darkness; the emergency lighting had obviously kicked in while he had been unconscious. It bathed the elevator in an eerie glow. The light wasn’t bright, but it afforded him some sight. He had no idea how long he’d been out, but he didn’t think it had been long. He glanced at his watch, only to find that it had been broken.

“Janet…” he called softly as he knelt beside her, his hand reached out and touched her face.

She slowly opened her eyes and looked at him, rewarding him with a small moan as she tried to move.

“What…happened?” she asked hesitantly.

“Some sort of explosion in the Mall…” he told her as he reached down and helped her sit up, “…you ok?” he asked unable to keep the worry from his voice as his hands run over her body searching for any injuries.

“Hmmm…I think so…you?”

“I’m ok.” He answered, as he thought how disoriented she sounded and his concern grew.

Whatever had happened in the Mall must have been pretty big. Jack could envisage the chaos that was now the Mall, from the noise and commotion that could be heard from inside the elevator.

People were shouting and screaming, some in pain others in fear. He could hear their cries, ringing in his ears, picture the horror on their faces. They were rushing, running in all directions, trying to flee the devastation. He could hear their footfalls. The calls for help echoed around the confines of the elevator. He could imagine the bodies lying hurt or dead, blood flowing and eyes unseeing. And see friends and relatives sitting beside their loved ones, crying or offering comfort. Total strangers would be helping one another. Disaster always seemed to bring out the best in most people. Acts of heroism by ordinary people who would risk life and limb to help others would save lives. He could sense the confusion as orders were yelled and evacuation begun. Fire! He knew there was a fire, probably more than one, and it was close. He could feel the temperature rising in their contained space.  The intense heat made its presence known.  The plumes of billowing thick black choking smoke conjured up by the smell. He could detect the screeching of sirens in the distance as the emergency services rushed to the scene. Police, Paramedics and fire fighters arrived to work together. A situation contained and dealt with as swiftly as possible.

“Umm…Jack.”

Janet’s voice broke into his thoughts.

“Yeah?”

“My water has broken.”  She calmly announced. “They can’t…you’re not due for a fortnight…” he answered her, panic in his voice.

Janet chuckled. “Well this kid takes after its father. Impatient!”

Jack smirked at her remark and brushed his lips lightly over hers.

“Ok mom…I’d better see about getting us outta here…before I end up having to play midwife…” he shivered “…I am so not delivering this kid…”

Jack rubbed Janet’s back as she leaned against the side of the elevator. Her hands were flat on the smooth wall; sweat and pain were obvious on her face. The contraction peaked and subsided as she breathed her way through it. Jack felt totally helpless. He’d walked around the small confined space with his wife for the last few hours, since her contractions had started in earnest. Her labour had proceeded quickly, everything was as it should be, so she had informed him and the baby would be arriving soon. Apparently with his help.

The last couple of hours had been hell for her. Not only had she had to cope with her progressing labour, she’d also had to contend with the confusion from outside. He watched her fight to contain her frustration as she listened to the cries of people in pain. She flinched at each shout for help. The screaming and the sobbing was ripping through her, causing her as much pain as each contraction.  Her instincts were to help these people. She was a doctor, a healer and she was helpless. Stuck in an elevator unable to do anything but listen. He had tried to get help but had gotten no response to his banging on the doors or his shouting. His noise was being lost amongst so many others. He’d tried his cell phone too, but it was dead, so he had no other choice but to give up. He hated not being in control. She’d spent the time coaching him for his up and coming roll, and he so didn’t want to do it. He was scared although he’d never admit it to her.

The sound of the fire alarm ringing continuously, loud and annoying, grated on their fragile nerves. The incessant noise, a constant reminder of their situation, allowed them no peace. Jack could still hear the sounds of panic beyond the stubbornly closed doors. But it was the fine trail of smoke, now crawling up the gap between those doors that were giving him cause for concern.

His eyes flickered across to those of his wife. He could see she knew as well as he did, what the problem was. They had to get out of here. The smoke was not a problem for them at the moment, but if it continued for too long or became any worse, they would be in deep trouble. He tried to prise the doors apart, but with just his bare hands it was an impossible task.

“Jack…it’s time…” she gasped resting a hand on his arm as another contraction hit her.

He helped her to lay on the floor and removed her panties with shaking hands. He squatted down in front of her bent legs as per her earlier instructions. His hands were resting gently on her knees. He watched for the appearance of the baby’s head, as he spoke words of comfort and encouragement to her. She pushed through one contraction after another, his hands ran soothingly back and forth along her leg. The air was blue with her language and he had been threatened with castration in a variety of interesting if not extremely painful ways.

Finally he spotted a dark patch of hair appear. Fear and excitement sparked through him as he told Janet to pant. The head slowly made its way into the world and he quickly checked the cord wasn’t wrapped around its neck. The head rested gently in Jack’s hand as he guided the shoulders out and the baby arrived with one final push.  He laid the baby on his jacket beside him and picked up the shoe lace that he’d removed from his trainer earlier, and tied off the cord. He turned the baby onto his side and rested the cord on the cold hard floor and using his key he began to saw through it. Finally it was done, the cord left on the baby was long and the end jagged, but Janet assured him it would do until they got to the hospital. He rolled the infant on to his back and wrapped his jacket around his son. He picked up the baby carefully and settled him into his arms. He was so beautiful. Jack was amazed at the intense feelings of love he had for this child already. Smiling he placed their son in his mother’s arms, watching her face light up as she smiled at the tiny bundle.

With the placenta delivered and put to one side wrapped in his shirt, Jack sat down beside his wife and son. He loved the sound of that. Wife and son. He ran a hand through her hair smiling as she raised her eyes to lock with his.

“God!...Jan he’s beautiful…”

Leaning down he captured her lips, her hand reached around to tangle in his hair as she parted her lips for him, his tongue plunged through to tangle with hers. His tongue left her mouth to lick along her bottom lip before he pulled back to look at her.

“I love you,” he whispered.

“Love you too, Jack.”

He brushed her lips lightly with his before moving to place a kiss on his son’s forehead.

#####

Jack sat there in the semi-darkness watching his wife and son sleeping beside him. This was his family. A small smile curled his lips, his happiness was sending a warm glow through him as he sat waiting for rescue. Life was great. It couldn’t get any better as far as he was concerned. Well apart from being at home with his family. His family, he’d had a family before but he’d lost them. A surge of pain rushed through him as he thought of Charlie, a son loved and lost. And he silently vowed that he wouldn’t lose this family. He was always going to be there for this child.

He ran his fingers through the boy’s hair amazed by the amount of dark hair his son possessed. The back of his fingers traced along the soft warm skin of a delicate cheek. His finger moved down to run gently along the tiny hand, the baby stirred, grabbed the large finger, clutching it in his tiny fist. Jack rubbed his thumb back and forth along the back of the hand that held his finger in an iron grip. He marvelled at the long elegant fingers and studied the infant’s tiny features. A fierce instinct to protect his son rose through him catching him by surprise. And something else. Pride.

He couldn’t believe it, he was a father again, and he couldn’t believe he was getting a second chance. He wouldn’t blow it this time. This beautiful little boy was his. God! He was barely 2 hours old and already he’d captured his father’s heart.

Jack was roused from his thoughts as Janet shifted and moaned, he reached out a hand, brushing the backs of his fingers gently along her cheek, temple to jaw. Shocked at how cool and clammy her skin felt he moved to kneel beside her, his knee landing in something tacky.

He looked down to see the large dark pool spreading beneath her body. His heart missed a beat as he immediately recognised the liquid; fear swamped him threatening to immobilize him.  He reached over and shook her shoulder, his fear was rising another notch as she opened her eyes. They seemed to have trouble focusing on him.

“Janet…you need to wake up…there’s a problem…you have to tell me what to do…”

Jack fought to keep the panic flowing through him out of his voice.

“There’s blood…lots of blood…how do I stop it?..”

She blinked, clearing her vision and stared at him.

“You can’t…Jack…”

Jack’s blood ran cold at her words.

“There must be something…” he said as terror washed over him.

“No…Jack…I’m sorry…” her grip tightened on her son, held in her arms.

“Janet?..” Jack’s hand left her shoulder to cup her cheek, as he knelt beside her on the cold hard floor. His thumb ran back and forth over the cold clammy skin, her face looked so pale in the low light. His eyes locked with hers, pleading with her to do something to help him stop this.

“It’s too late, Jack…I’m sorry…”

“NO!”

“I’m dying…Jack” she whispered a shiver running through her body.

“NO…”Jack helped her to sit up, the baby held to her chest,  “…you can’t die…” he sat down behind her “…you hear me…” he pulled her back against his chest, his legs outstretched along side hers “…you can’t die…” he wrapped his arms around her hugging her to him.

“Jack…listen to…me…” she whispered urgently.

Jack shook his head. “NO…you listen to me…HE…needs you…” he stabbed his finger at their son, held in her arms “…I need you…you can’t leave us…” he let his forehead rest against the back of her head and closed his eyes, breathing in the smell of her “…you can’t leave me…please…”  he pleaded, his voice cracking with emotion as he fought to contain his tears.

“Jack…please…”

He felt the warm presence of her hand on his arm. As he placed a kiss in her hair, his hand moved to cover hers. Tears welled up in his eyes threatening to fall. He took a deep shuddering breath as he once again fought to get his emotions under control. He needed to keep a clear head.

He slowly opened his eyes to meet hers as she turned her head. He saw a deep sadness in their depths but he also saw courage and strength. Her next words were spoken in barely a whisper, but Jack heard every word as clearly as if she had yelled them at him.

“Jack…I need you…to hear me…ok…”

He nodded slowly, his heart was in his mouth.

“I need you…to promise me…you…you won’t do…anything stupid…”

Jack shook his head, not trusting his voice, as he felt the sting of tears in his eyes, how could he promise her that. Didn’t she know what this would do to him? She was his life.

“Jack, please…you have a son now…he needs you…please…”

He glanced at his son, still sleeping peacefully in his mother’s arms. A mother he would never know. Then he looked back at his wife, the love of his life and he felt his heart break. Her tears were flowing across her all too pale cheeks and her chin trembled as she fought to contain her sobs. His hand came up to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing back and forth through her hot tears. He slowly nodded his agreement.

“Say it…Jack…” she sobbed “I need to…hear it…”

“I swear…ok…” he whispered sniffing back his tears.

He watched her as she nodded and smiled at him. The bright beautiful smile he’d walk the Earth just to see. And in that instant he felt his heart shatter. He wondered what the hell he’d just agreed to.

His thoughts were interrupted by Janet as she spoke her voice hoarse with emotion.

“Jack…love him…for both of us…”

He closed his eyes against the onslaught of tears. A lone tear escaped and ran silently down his cheek.

“I…I will…”

He opened his watery eyes once again to see her smiling face.

“Love you, Jack…”

“I love you…always…” he whispered as he kissed her.

‘OH GOD! This couldn’t be happening!’ he thought as he heard a commotion on the floor below the elevator. Finally the rescue team had arrived.

Jack’s hope soared as he placed a kiss in his wife’s hair, hugging her closer. Help had arrived and with medical attention she would be fine, he thought as she relaxed against him.

Jack’s anger began to surface as his pain became unbearable. He lashed out in his mind at the person responsible for all his hurt.

How could you do this to me?  HOW?  I love you. And YOU hurt me. I built my life with you and YOU left me. YOU knew how much this would hurt me, and you still made me promise. Why?

I can’t do this. It hurts too much. OH GOD! Janet I’m sorry, I know you made me swear, but the pain is unbearable. I can’t go on. Not alone.

How could you not be here with me? I need you.

I never even got to say goodbye.

The fire-fighter passed the baby to the waiting paramedic, who took him carefully into his arms and moved away to check him over. Then they turned back to the difficult task of removing Janet from the elevator. The small gap slowed their efforts. Removing his equipment and jacket the young fireman was raised up to the gap by his team-mates, Jack grabbed his arms and helped pull him through the opening.

“What the hell kept ya?” demanded Jack angrily.

He couldn’t believe how long they’d been left there in that elevator. Hours. Their drama unfolding like some bad movie. Their scene just one among many, but the only one he cared about.

“Take it easy...” the fire-fighter placed a reassuring hand on Jack’s shoulder. “…we got here as soon as we could, but the fires had cut off all access to the elevators…” reaching out a hand he checked Janet’s pulse. “…so we had to take care of those first and make the area safe for a rescue…”

Jack knelt beside his wife, while he listened to the young guy's explanation and knew it was the truth but this did nothing to calm his anger at a situation out of his control. He slid his hands under her arms as the guy took her legs and they gently lifted her off the floor. Her blood dripped, leaving a trail in there wake. Between them, they managed to move her to the opening and carefully lowered her to the waiting firemen below.

#####

Jack was standing to one side watching the paramedics working on his wife. He was fighting the urge to run to her side and scoop her up into his arms.  His hope had soared after the rescuers arrived. Only to come crashing down once again.  She had lost consciousness as they had lowered her from the elevator, she now lay lifeless on the floor. Her skin was deathly pale as a new pool of blood was collecting beneath her. Her sharp rapid breaths had scared him, but not as much as the silence that now followed. He was standing there, his arms hanging loosely by his sides. Unshed tears were shining in his eyes as he fought to keep control. His body was shaking uncontrollably and he couldn’t stop it. Complete and utter terror ran through him, as he watched the paramedics trying to resuscitate his wife.

Why is this happening?  Why? I don’t want to lose you. Don’t want you to leave me. Please. You have to fight. You can’t give up. DAMN IT! Don’t do this to me. You can’t die. DO YOU HEAR ME.? I won’t let you. DAMN IT, JANET. Fight. Breathe. The words echoed around his head, but no sound passed his lips.

Jack watched as her chest began to rise and fall unaided. He let out a slow shaky breath that he hadn’t been aware of holding. He moved forward as the paramedics loaded his wife onto the waiting stretcher, and he followed them to the waiting ambulance. He was numb with shock and fear, his body was running on autopilot, his mind had shut down, unable to cope with anything else at this time.

Jack reached out and grabbed her pillow hugging it tightly to his body, burying his face into the fabric, to stifle the noise of his sobs. His tears flowed freely as his memories trampled through his mind. They were torturing him with unwanted images that he was powerless to stop.

God! He hated hospitals. Hated the way they smelled. The antiseptic mixed with the bleach, the smell of the sick and the dying. He hated this place. He needed to get out of here, he needed some air. But he couldn’t leave. He had to wait for news. He had to know that she was ok. She would be fine. She had to be. She was his life.

Jack paced back and forth across the small waiting room. His anger was growing with every step, along with his worry. What the hell was keeping them? Why hadn’t they come to see him, to tell him what was happening? He hated being kept in the dark. It gave him way too much time to think.

CRAP! He needed to hit something.

#####

Jack’s anger surged through him, as he stood there, his fists clenched and unclenched at his sides, as his pent up emotions tried to break free. His mind was in turmoil. How could she? How dare she leave? He breathed deeply, as his hands came up to scrub at his face. His thoughts were a jumbled mess. No, it’s not fair! Why the hell is she doing this?

“YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME.” Yelled Jack.

His hands moved up to scrub violently through his hair, as he tried in vain to control his feelings. His rage boiled up as the Doctor left the room to fetch him a glass of water and he was utterly powerless to stop it. His body shook uncontrollably as he fought to suppress his fury. But he lost. It exploded from him as he turned and slammed his fist into the wall beside him. The force ripped a hole in the plaster and sent shockwaves up his arm to jar his shoulder. He slowly removed his hand from the hole, staring at it as he collapsed into the chair behind him. Shock and horror slammed through him as his elbows dropped onto his knees, he hung his head, his hands moved round to the back of it and his fingers locked together as he began to slowly rock.

“No, no, no, no,” he whispered in anguish to the empty room. The Doctors words became echoed whispers that turned to screams in his mind.

‘I’m very sorry, Colonel O’Neill. We did everything we could. But your wife died in the OR…there was nothing we could do.”

Jack squeezed his eyes shut and hugged his head tightly in his locked arms as the words resounded around his mind. Driving home the reality of the situation.

I am alone. Truly alone. You have gone. Left, never to return. And as the darkness fills me, I’m trying to understand why this is happening. Trying to work out how I will go on.

Tears burned beneath his eyelids as he fought to keep them from falling.

God! I love you! I want you here with me, in my arms where you belong. But that’s never going to happen. I’m never going to hold you again, am I? I’m never going to see your beautiful smile or taste your sweet lips. I’m never going to be with you again, for the rest of my days. You can’t leave me. PLEASE, I need you.

Daniel gently pushed the door partly open, popped his head inside and spied his friend sitting in the corner.

‘Oh GOD! This was bad’ he thought.

Jack was sitting there, slumped forward, his elbows on his knees.  His head was resting in his hands and he was shaking uncontrollably.  Pushing the door all the way open, Daniel entered the room, Sam and Teal’c followed a step behind him. He walked towards his friend calling to him as he went.

“Hey, Jack.”

There was no response. He tried again, a little louder this time.

“Jack.”

Nothing. Daniel glanced over at Sam, who just shrugged, then back to Jack.

He stood in front of the Colonel, concerned at the lack of response he was getting from his ashen-faced friend.

“Jack…what’s happened?”
